The Sculptural Beauty of a Small Cup
What drew us to this yunomi was its beautifully unexpected shape. Its low, wide form features pronounced, irregular contours along the outer surface. Despite its small size, the cup has a striking presence, balancing delicacy with boldness.
Even pieces fired together in the same kiln can emerge in remarkably different colors and finishes. From creamy whites and warm ivory tones to misty grays and soft blues, each color brings out a different expression of its distinctive form.
Fired in a traditional wood-fired climbing kiln at Akahadayama Motogama in Nara, Japan, this piece reflects a pottery tradition spanning more than 200 years. Today, under eighth-generation Gyozo Furuse (Noriko Furuse), the workshop continues to embrace the Japanese philosophy of yo no bi—the beauty found in objects made for everyday use.
The Individual Character of Handmade Pottery
Each cup has its own character, with natural variations in shape, glaze, and finish that develop through the making and firing process.
The glazed surface has a gentle, natural luster that may appear more pronounced in person than in photographs. The close-up images highlight some of the variations in color and glaze, but each piece is unique. The glazed surface has a subtle sheen that may not be fully captured in photographs.
While you can select your preferred color family, the exact shade, glaze pattern, and appearance may vary noticeably, even within the same color group. Please note that the cup you receive may differ from the one shown in the photographs.
