Care & Maintenance

Urushi Safety
Genuine urushi may cause skin irritation or an allergic rash upon direct contact with the skin. Always wear protective gloves when handling urushi and avoid direct skin contact. If skin irritation occurs, please consult a physician. Please read the included instructions carefully before use.

How to Use
A detailed booklet and step-by-step video guides are included to guide you through the traditional kintsugi process. The videos cover repairs for breaks, chips, and cracks, as well as the preparation and care involved in working with urushi, including tool cleaning and preparing an urushi curing box.

Please read the included instructions and watch the appropriate video before beginning your repair. Because urushi requires time to cure between steps, follow the recommended curing conditions and timing throughout the process.

Care After Repair
Handle repaired pieces with care. Hand wash gently with a soft sponge and mild dish soap. Do not use in a microwave, oven, dishwasher, or dish dryer, and avoid direct heat, prolonged soaking, and refrigerator or freezer storage.

Repaired areas are not as strong as the original piece. Avoid applying pressure to the repaired area or lifting the piece by a repaired handle or other load-bearing section.

For greater strength and longevity, allow the repaired piece to rest for approximately one month after completion before use.

Urushi Storage
Store urushi in a cool, dark place away from high temperatures. For best results, use within approximately one year.

Give a favorite piece a new life with your own hands.

A chipped bowl, a cracked plate, or a broken cup doesn't have to be the end. Rather than hiding its history, kintsugi lets the repaired lines become part of the piece, preserving the traces of its past while giving it a new character of its own.

MANGETSU invites you into the traditional practice of kintsugi through its materials and time-honored process. From joining broken pieces to filling chips and carefully building the repaired lines, the repair is carried out using genuine urushi lacquer and traditional materials rather than modern adhesives and epoxy putty. Taking the time to work through each step with patience is part of what makes the experience meaningful, bringing you closer to the materials, techniques, and rhythm of traditional Japanese kintsugi.

For the final expression, choose genuine gold powder for a warm, luminous finish or genuine silver powder for a quieter, refined finish. The time and care you put into the repair become part of the piece and its continuing story.
